Steps

  1. Create an OpenRouter account

    Go to openrouter.ai and create an account. Add a small credit balance to cover API usage.

  2. Generate an API key

    In OpenRouter, go to Keys → Create Key. Name it (e.g. "use.fo BYOK") and copy the key. It starts with "sk-or-".

  3. Open use.fo Settings → BYOK

    On your device, go to use.fo Settings → BYOK / My API Key.

  4. Select OpenRouter as provider

    Choose OpenRouter from the provider list for STT and/or rewrite. Select your preferred model from the available options.

  5. Enter your OpenRouter key

    Paste your key. use.fo stores it encrypted on your device.

  6. Test dictation

    Speak a sentence and verify that BYOK is active and processing correctly.

Before you start

You need a use.fo BYOK license (Desktop $29.99 or Mobile $9.99) and an OpenRouter account. OpenRouter requires prepaid credits for usage.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Balance depleted error

Solution: Add more credits to your OpenRouter account at openrouter.ai/credits.

Problem: Model not available

Solution: Some OpenRouter models require specific account tiers. Check that your selected model is available on your account level.
